Attorney General Steve Marshall: 'This was not a random act of violence'
Kyle Benjamin Douglas Calvert, 26, a resident of the east Birmingham suburb of Irondale, was arrested by federal agents on two felony counts of malicious damage by explosive and possession of an unregistered destructive device.
“That device had the characteristics of an IED, and Calvert added a substantial number of nails and other shrapnel to increase its destructive capability,” US attorneys said in a court filing on Wednesday, according to NBC News.
Prosecutors asked the judge to keep Calvert in jail pending trial. The IED, or improvised explosive device, was also a firebomb. “The addition of ignitable liquids to the IED demonstrates weaponization characteristics due to the enhanced ability for the IED to initiate a fire.” Luckily, no one was hurt and damage was superficial.
