Wear It Purple Day | ReachOut Australia

Today is Wear it Purple Day in Australia, an annual fundraising and awareness event for LGBTIQAlphabetical young people. Held every August since 2010, Wear it Purple Day was inaugurated after the suicide of Tyler Clementi, an American teenager from New Jersey who had been captured kissing another male on video.

Whereas the Wear it Purple Day tradition began out of the need to prevent self-harm, an idea that was contained neatly in the phrase ‘it gets better,’ today Wear it Purple Day is an extension of the new Pride culture and all its ‘queer’ transgressive politics. Far from a movement for the marginalized, Wear it Purple Day has become another annual exercise in insufferable, indoctrinating rainbow oppression.
