Love AGPs? Hate AGPs? Dr. Bailey Wants To Know What You Think
A survey especially for critics of 'gender identity'
Dr. J. Michael Bailey wants to know what all kinds of people think about autogynephilia. He is “especially interested in surveying gender critical respondents,” he says, “although gender critical identification is not necessary for participation.”
You can take the survey at this link. (The survey items can be seen at this link.) Love AGPs? Hate AGPs? Whatever you think about AGPs, Dr. Bailey genuinely wants to know about it through this survey.
Here is the approval letter for the survey from the Institutional Review Board at Northwestern University, where Dr. Bailey is a professor of psychology and behavioral genetics.
Bailey will continue to be transparent. “I will be providing survey results, once I have them. I expect to have results sometime between April 1 and May 31, 2025. Later, I will also share an essay empirically addressing beliefs and questions that I am able to.”
After the survey, Dr. Bailey will be able to draw contrasts between public attitudes about AGP and the scientific data he has put together for more than two decades. “I have recently conducted a large survey of ‘gender variant males,’ many of whom admit to having autogynephilia, and I believe many will find the results interesting,” he says.
Agree or disagree, everyone in ‘gender critical’ social media spaces will indeed take a great interest in whatever he has to say. They always do. Now he wants to know what they have to say, even if they have said it to him before on social media. Love him or hate him, Dr. Bailey wants you to take the survey.
In pursuit of transparency, The Distance has extended an invitation to Dr. Bailey for a return visit to our podcast to share his findings. He has accepted.
Here is our previous interview in 2024. Dr. Bailey was very gracious with his time. Before we began recording, he asked what my “angle” was. I replied that I was looking for the truth. Dr. Bailey seemed to approve. He is first and foremost a scientist looking for scientific evidence of what the truth even is.
Survey evidence is ‘softer’ (heh) than the hard science (hehehe) of the penile plethysmograph, the instrument that Dr. Bailey uses to find out what actually ‘turns on’ AGP men the most. Turns out that it isn’t ‘sissy hypno porn,’ primarily, according to the plethysmograph, while survey evidence suggests the median AGP male went looking for pornography that fed AGP predilections he had formed about five years beforehand.
This finding is unpopular in certain quarters. For example, many radical feminists want to blame pornography for AGP. The most Puritanical or moralizing critics of gender ideology want to blame male perversion in general. A man in a dress evokes disgust reactions and even dysregulation in some.
Dr. Bailey is saying that we are putting the cart before the horse. Nature is unconcerned with morality. Some small percentage of men seem to be vulnerable to AGP ideation. Sex mimics exist in nature, though of course they are not the opposite sex; sex mimics are mimics.
Dr. Bailey’s body of research bears that out. Effeminate homosexual men adopt transsexualism in part as a means to attract men. AGP men are heterosexual, but attracted to the woman they see in the mirror.
Dr. Bailey is of course not arguing that these men are women. He argues that they are men, and that the most rational of these men are the least likely to cross-dress in public, enter women’s spaces, or pursue medical transition. This could make them helpful in the politics of overturning gender ideology, he says, to no small controversy.
But what do you think about autogynephilia? Don’t tell me, tell Dr. Bailey. Whether you are my friend or my enemy, his friend or his enemy, or entirely neutral towards us, you should tell him what you think about AGP. The more people tell him, the more truth will emerge from his scientific results. That is in everyone’s interest.
"Effeminate homosexual men adopt transsexualism as a means to attract men."
It was Ray Blanchard who came up with the concept of the homosexual transsexual, no? But is anyone with the necessary qualifications and objectivity studying this phenomenon? It does not sound like it falls within the scope Michael Bailey's research.
It is hard to believe that a well adjusted effeminate man who fancies men, enjoys good mental health and has not been scarred by trauma from his or other people's reaction to his same-sex attraction would undergo a so-called sex change in order to have sex with men. Surely men who find themselves in such a predicament were marginalized and/or badly hurt in some way to begin with.
It is equally difficult to conceive of the sort of man who would be attracted to a so-called homosexual transsexual unless it were a manifestation of some sort of paraphilia on his part.
My reservations about the homosexual transsexual are based on the idea that gay men (which a homosexual transsexual clearly is not) celebrate their own male bodies and male sexuality. As a masculine gay man, I can think of nothing more nightmarish and fraught with peril and uncertainty than doing away with my masculinity and the parts of myself that make me male in order to attract a man and have sex with him. Shudder.
Unfortunately the premise is faulty. Gender is a linguistic term. “Sex Stereotype” is the term he’s using without clear definition.
“AGP” don’t attempt to look like women, they mimic their idea of prostitutes generally. AGP fantasy literature is not about wearing a Gap teeshirt and Mommy pants, it’s garish makeup, miniskirts, stilettos, fishnet stockings and 70’s-era streetwalker wigs.
In all I’ve read of Bailey he is utterly oblivious to these self-evident facts, which make the “research” utterly spurious IMHO.
Even the photos you supply as illustrations look like hookerwear.
So, to be clear, we are to consider research on men who dress to imitate hookers, some people naturally bring turned off by being around men looking to turn tricks, while pretending the look these men take on is supposed to be “a woman” as though all women dressed like hookers.
