Missouri Whistleblower Is The Beginning Of The End For The Cult Of The 'Trans Child'
An all-American medical scandal with global impact
Jamie Reed was always going to happen.
Someone like her was always going to be the one who made history, who set the terms of what the right side of history will be.
So many liberal, progressive Americans have been scorned as “terfs” and “transphobes” for questioning the wisdom of sterilizing children that someone like Reed was inevitably going to come forward.
Justice would eventually rain like waters.
Married to a trans man, Reed is “left of Bernie” in her own words. She became a case manager at the Washington University Transgender Center at St. Louis Children’s Hospital because she genuinely cared about “trans kids.” Yesterday, she published her story at the Free Press, owned by journalist Bari Weiss.
“The way the American medical system is treating these patients is the opposite of the promise we make to ‘do no harm,’” she wrote. “Instead, we are permanently harming the vulnerable patients in our care.”
A few hours later, there was an announcement from the office of Missouri Attorney General Andrew Bailey that thanks to Reed’s sworn affidavit, “a full investigation into these shocking allegations” has been underway for two weeks.
The sworn affidavit asserts, among other things, that individuals at the Center are using experimental drugs on children, distributing puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones without individualized assessment, and even giving children these life-altering drugs without parental consent. The whistleblower says that the actions taken by the Center have led children to attempt suicide and that the Center never discontinues prescribing cross-sex hormones, no matter how much those drugs are harming the child. The whistleblower also has provided documentary evidence that the Center has been unlawfully billing state taxpayers to fund these actions.
The craze for pediatric sterilization began with a flimsy evidence base. That fact was always going to come out in a courtroom one day. However, the “unlawfully billing state taxpayers” part takes the issue out of civil torts and into criminal courts.
Al Capone famously went down for tax evasion. If the “gender medicine” mafia gets taken down for defrauding the taxpayer, that is only fitting.
We can be sure that this investigation is a serious threat to the “trans kids” narrative because Washington University is taking it very seriously.
“We are alarmed by the allegations reported in the article published by The Free Press describing practices and behaviors the author says she witnessed,” the University said in a terse press release. “We are taking this matter very seriously and have already begun the process of looking into the situation to ascertain the facts.” In other words, they already know the story is true.
Washington University is not going to defend their Transgender Center. On the contrary, campus counsel will do everything possible to limit the damage AG Bailey can do to them. Closure of the Center and an out of court settlement are likely outcomes.
“In just a two-year period from 2020 to 2022, the Center initiated medical transition for more than 600 children,” Jamie Reed’s affidavit says.
About 74% of these children were [female]. These procedures were paid for mostly by private insurance, but during this time, it is my understanding that the Center also billed the cost for these procedures to state and federal publicly funded insurance programs.”
“I have personally witnessed staff say they were uncomfortable with how the Center has told them they have to code bills sent to publicly funded insurance programs. I have witnessed staff directly ask the providers for clarification on billing questions and have providers dismiss the concerns and work to have the patients have this care covered as the priority.”
For some years now, critics of the “trans kids” phenomenon have been talking about the very issues raised in the investigation: girls who want their breasts “put back on,” who think testosterone will act as birth control, who suffer infertility as adults.
Excuses for this madness vary. “Children come into the clinic using pronouns of inanimate objects like ‘mushroom,’ ‘rock,’ or ‘helicopter,’” Reed says. “Children come into the clinic saying they want hormones because they do not want to be gay. “
Children come in changing their identities on a day-to-day basis. Children come in under clear pressure by a parent to identify in a way inconsistent with the child’s actual identity. In all these cases, the doctors decide to issue puberty blockers or cross-sex hormones.
Secretive insurance billing, parents ignored when they withdraw consent, reckless experimentation with the developing bodies of children — this was all “necessary and life saving,” according to the activists, because otherwise the “trans kids” will kill themselves: nice child you’ve got there, would be a pity if something happened to them.
It was always a racket, and the scheme was destined to unravel one day under cross-examination. If not this time, then the next time, because Jamie Reed will not be the last whistleblower.
She is only the first of many to come in this all-American travesty.
Here at The Distance, we use an academic historical, cultural, and literary approach to understanding the “gender identity” phenomenon in general, as well as the “trans child” in particular. Politics are not a primary focus of our work, but this is a watershed event in American political history.
What Reed has uncovered in Missouri is comparable to patent medicine scandals of the nation’s past, but with insurance fraud and a political party attached. Bailey is a Republican, and so we can expect the investigation to be framed as an “attack on trans kids” and other such rubbish.
Likewise, Reed can expect personal and professional attacks, threats, even violence for speaking out. She will be framed for literal murder, actual genocide, and harboring hatreds. Those of us who came to this issue from the left, who are now alienated from its excesses and ejected from its membership counsels for our heresies against the holy god-children of gender: we know the score.
As I was being purged from organizations, associations, social media circles for discussing this topic, I often asked my critics whether they had tried polling “we must sterilize the children” to see how it might work out as elections. They never responded, for they knew it was a loser. Instead, they expected that the magical power of the word “transphobia” would never diminish. Against our advice, Democrats married themselves to a child-sterilizing insurance fraud scheme. Planned Parenthood has been doing this at scores of locations, too. Consequences are coming. It is only a matter of time. Jamie Reed knows. I know. So do we all, here.

So far, complete radio silence from the national MSM on this. They're no doubt furiously trying to figure out how to spin poor Jamie into an anti-LGBTQ transphobe. Good thing she was smart enough to lawyer up first.
Thanks for this great piece, Matt. You express the sentiments and give heart to me and many a battle scarred liberal trying to turn a tide that seems to keep pushing and pushing against us. I expect the MSM is regrouping. Will they do a frontal attack on Jamie? I can see the Michelle Goldberg column heading already: “Jamie Reed’s Attack on Trans Kids Won’t Work” (with some intelligent-sounding nuance in the body of course!). Or will they pivot towards doing actual investigative reporting to discover the truth, which should be their job? Radio silence as of today. As you say, if not with this whistleblower, then maybe with the next one.
