Scott Wiener praised “critical legislation to ban forced outing policies & ensure trans youth can decide for themselves if, when, & how to come out to parents” yesterday. “Forced outing puts kids at risk of violence & homelessness. Coming out is a personal decision & no one’s else’s business.”

Assembly Bill 1955, numbered conveniently for the year corresponding to the very sexist stereotypes that it seeks to reify in children, passed on party lines. It forbids school districts from disclosing that children have changed their “gender” (read: used a new name and pronouns) while at school.

Speaking for the legislation, Wiener and other Democratic supporters compared ‘transgender identification’ to coming out as gay or lesbian. In reality, neither sexuality involves risk of iatrogenic medical harm, while most kids expressing dysphoria in adolescence will simply turn out gay or lesbian if they are not “affirmed” in a transgender identity.
